Safe Self-Test for the Early Detection of Cervical Cancer

Early detection is the most important factor in identifying cervical cancer in time and treating it successfully. For a long time, cervical screening relied solely on medical examinations such as the smear test – today, modern HPV diagnostics offer a new form of cervical screening test that is more precise and accessible than ever before.

An HPV test identifies viral infections that often precede abnormal cervical cells and malignant cervical cell changes. It therefore offers the chance to recognize risks before cell changes become dangerous. According to Cancer Research UK, cervical cancer is a highly preventable cancer when detected through regular cervical screening.

For most women, this means more control over their own cervical cancer prevention – medically sound, scientifically validated, and independent of appointments at the doctor's office. HPV self-sampling is now considered a crucial advancement in cancer prevention and cervical cancer screening. It makes early detection simpler and more personalised, helping to reduce health inequalities and reach diverse and underserved populations who may not attend routine cervical screening.

Why an HPV Test Is So Important for Women

Over 70% of all women become infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) during their lifetime. These HPV strains are usually harmless, but certain high-risk types can cause cervical cell changes that, if left untreated, may develop into cervical cancer.

Because an HPV infection often causes no symptoms, it frequently goes undetected. Regular testing and cervical screening are therefore crucial to detect HPV in time.

With the home HPV test, you can manage your cervical screening independently, discreetly and flexibly – without waiting time, but with maximum safety. Whether you prefer self-testing at home or a visit to your doctor, the important thing is that you get tested.

Symptoms and Possible Routes of Infection

In most cases, an HPV infection goes unnoticed and is asymptomatic. Occasionally, however, the following symptoms may occur:

  • Unusual discharge or light bleeding, e.g. after sexual intercourse or with a new sexual partner
  • Itching or irritation in the vaginal area
  • Visible genital warts in cases of infection with low-risk HPV types

Possible routes of infection:

  • Transmission through sexual contact (vaginal, anal or oral), including unprotected sex
  • Skin-to-skin contact in the intimate area
  • Less common: transmission from mother to child during birth

An HPV vaccination offers protection against the most common high-risk virus types (HPV 16 and 18). Nevertheless, regular HPV testing and cervical screening remain the most reliable method for early cancer detection. Even vaccinated women should continue with their cervical screening test schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Does the HPV Self-Test Work?

You will receive a complete HPV test kit with instructions for self-sampling and return shipping materials in discreet packaging. After taking the vaginal swab, you place the sample in the test tube packaging and send it back to our laboratory free of charge. You will receive your HPV test results within a few business days.

How Reliable Is the Result?

The HPV test is based on the cobas® HPV test from Roche, which is also used in GP surgeries and clinical laboratories for cervical screening. Its accuracy is comparable to a smear test performed by a doctor. The HPV test checks for HPV DNA in high-risk strains, making it a highly reliable HPV test.

Which HPV Types Are Tested?

The laboratory tests for 14 high-risk HPV types, including the most common: HPV 16 and HPV 18 – responsible for about 70% of all cases of cervical cancer. These high-risk types are the focus of every organised cervical screening programme.

When Should I Get Tested?

An HPV test is recommended for women aged 30 and over – especially for the early detection of cervical cancer. It is also advisable if you have a new sexual partner, an abnormal smear test result, or if an HPV infection is suspected. Self-testing with a home HPV kit is a convenient alternative to a cervical screening test at the doctor's office.

Is the Sample Collection Painful?

No, the HPV self-sampling process is simple, hygienic, and painless. The self-sampling kit includes detailed instructions that guide you through the vaginal swab step by step.

What Happens if the Test Result Is Positive?

A positive HPV test result indicates an infection with a high-risk HPV type. This does not automatically mean cancer. Your doctor will discuss the next steps at a follow-up appointment, which may include further tests to check for abnormal cells or cervical cell changes. In many cases, the body clears the human papillomavirus on its own.

Do Health Insurance Companies Cover the Costs?

Our services are aimed at self-paying clients. Reimbursement by statutory health insurance is unfortunately not possible in this case. If in doubt, please ask your health insurance company whether and under which conditions a test from us can be reimbursed.
