Symptoms and Possible Routes of Infection

In most cases, an HPV infection goes unnoticed and is asymptomatic. Occasionally, however, the following symptoms may occur:

  • Unusual discharge or light bleeding, e.g. after sexual intercourse or with a new sexual partner
  • Itching or irritation in the vaginal area
  • Visible genital warts in cases of infection with low-risk HPV types

Possible routes of infection:

  • Transmission through sexual contact (vaginal, anal or oral), including unprotected sex
  • Skin-to-skin contact in the intimate area
  • Less common: transmission from mother to child during birth

An HPV vaccination offers protection against the most common high-risk virus types (HPV 16 and 18). Nevertheless, regular HPV testing and cervical screening remain the most reliable method for early cancer detection. Even vaccinated women should continue with their cervical screening test schedule.
